Fat children 'struggle to make friends'

Children who are heavier than their peers at ages four and five are more likely to struggle socially several years later, according to a new study. Researchers followed more than 3,300 children for about four years and found that heavy children were up to 20pc more likely at age eight or nine to have social difficulties and emotional problems.

Youth mental health plan to be published

The Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald has reiterated her commitment to youth mental health issues and is looking forward to the release of a public report on the issue. The Dublin Mid-West public representative is welcoming the imminent report on mental health issues following the successful 'Working and communities, as this was a priority identified by the young participants at the Forum in Aras an Uachtarain."
Children as young as 12 are sleeping rough in our city

A Salvation Army centre in the city is widening its support for homeless teenagers by providing them with counselling as well as accommodation. The Salvation Army project was one of the €5,000 grant winners in this year's Dublin Bus Community Support Programme. The grant will help set up the counselling service.

Pat Kenny leads 'life cycle' for suicide charity

A TV star, former Olympic athlete, and numerous politicians got on their bikes yesterday to raise money for suicide prevention. Around 50 people led by broadcaster Pat Kenny, Senator Eamon Coghlan and Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague, took part in a two-hour cycle in aid of charity Console.
