'Your Good Self' is a new joint initiative between the HSE and Cork County Library and Arts Service aimed at promoting emotional well-being as part of overall health. The main component of the "Your Good Self" programme is the bibliotherapy scheme. Bibliotherapy is the use of reading materials for therapeutic purposes. Bibliotherapy or healthy reading schemes are well established in the U.K. and Irish schemes include "Mind Yourself" in Wexford and "The Power of Words" in Dublin.
UCC lecturers get exceptional citizen award

Two lecturers at UCC have been awarded an exceptional citizen award for their work in highlighting issues around mental health and the establishment of Critical Voices Network Ireland. Harry Gijbels, attached to the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Lydia Sapouna, from the School of Applied Social Studies, were given the award for their campaigning work and the establishment of the grassroots movement which puts patients and practitioners on an even footing.
MENTAL HEALTH IRELAND AND LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION WORKING TOGETHER

Mental Health Ireland (MHI) and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) are delighted to announce the launch of a new partnership between the two Associations with the aim of promoting Mental Health Awareness in Ireland. The LGFA and MHI will be increasing awareness of mental health issues and preventative steps through Gaelic4Mothers and Others, an LGFA development initiative, and Building Resilience Together, a MHI awareness initiative.
Mental health programme DELIVERED AT GARDA COLLEGE

Garda Liaison Inspectors recently completed a one-day education programme delivered by the National Service User Executive (NSUE), Garda colleagues and HSE staff, at the Garda College, Templemore, Co. Tipperary, The programme focused on the legal implement the MOU. Participants were given a number of case scenarios replicating potential institutions where staff of the HSE and An Garda Siochana are charged with removing or returning a person to an approved centre.

Strike warning given at Central Mental Hospital

More than 100 nurses and care staff are poised to go on strike at the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum, Their decision follows the introduction of new cost-saving measures by the HSE, including cuts to staff numbers, unpaid meal breaks and changes in rosters. Speaking to the Informer, SIPTU process of the Public Service nursing sector organiser Louise O'Reilly said that the overhaul had come as a surprise. "We just weren't sure what they were asking of us. It was very vague.
Mental health funding to help break down barriers

A south Tipperary disability and mental health project has received funding which will enable a number of people to receive special care, suited to their needs. The grant, from the Genio Trust, will fund a project in St. Luke's Hospital in Clonmel, helping them to provide for four later life psychiatry service users with severe and enduring mental health difficulties with some home-based respite care tailored to their individual needs. Twenty two projects will receive almost €2 million funding which will be used to help people move from institutional care to Independent living, supported by community-based services. In 2010 grants of almost €3.8m were awarded.
