Children as young as 10 are to be shown airbrushed pictures of a scantily-clad Britney Spears and male models in their underwear. The move is being taken in some schools in the UK as part of a positive body image lesson. The pupils will be presented with "before and after" photos to teach them how the images are altered in the media and show them the "impossible standard" being set by advertising and the media.

Minister to meet doctors over unit

Mental Health Minister Kathleen Lynch is to meet consultant psychiatrists from the south-east to discuss the HSE's planned closure of a 49-bed acute unit. The meeting takes place on Wednesday when consultants concerned about the plans to close St Michaels psychiatric unit in Clonmel next spring, will ask Ms Lynch to approve an "interim suspension" of the plans.
 
Mental health service challenge

There are going to be challenges to managing acute mental health admissions in north Dublin following the permanent closure of St Ita's, the Health Service Executive (HSE) said this week. Neither are there plans for a Crisis Intervention Unit within the Mental Health Services in north Dublin, the HSE told a Regional Health Forum.

Irish scientists find genetic link to schizophrenia and bipolar

IRISH researchers have played a leading role in discovering a genetic link to a person's risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. An international research consortium, including scientists from Trinity College Dublin (TCD), have found that many of the DNA variations identified contribute to both diseases. The findings are significant advances in die understanding of the causes of these chronic and often debilitating disorders.
 
Report highlights ill health suffered hy homeless people

Depression, dental decay and the threat to health from alcohol and drug use feature heavily among homeless people, almost half of whom suffer from both physical and mental ill health, according to a report. To add to their tragedy, members of the homeless community arc plagued by a range of conditions, including hepatitis, arthritis, asthma and high blood pressure.
 
Postnatal mums suffer in silence with depression

THOUSANDS of new mums are suffering in silence because their postnatal depression goes untreated, according to a report. The study, for the charity 4Children, says 35,000 mothers every year in Britain struggle with symptoms and do not get professional help, Irish support group, Postnatal Depression (PND) Ireland, estimates as many as one in five women here suffer from the illness.
 
Heroin key problem for homeless women

Heroin is now one of the single biggest problems facing homeless women in Cork. It topped the list of the most used drug by the city's homeless female population, with cannabis, head-shop substances and un-prescribed benzodiazepines next on the list. A fifth of the city's homeless women use drugs, with almost half of all women in emergency accommodation taking drugs.
