Expert warns against baby food fad

Irish women have been warned that the baby food diet taking Hollywood by storm could trigger an eating disorder. The Director of the Eating Disorder Resource Centre of Ireland, Suzanne Morgan, has warned this diet could spark dangerous eating habits in young people. "It could end up triggering over-eating or binge-eating because the body is craving nutrients.

Eating disorders up pregnancy depression risk

Women who have suffered from eating disorders or have been abused in the past may be at an increased risk of developing depression during and soon after pregnancy, the results of a new study from the University of North Carolina indicate.

President urges unity on mental health

President McAleese yesterday challenged State agencies, voluntary groups and schools to find new ways to work together in order to better respond to the mental health needs of young people. She was speaking at the launch of a forum on “working together for positive youth mental health” at Áras an Uachtaráin attended by experts in the area of education and health, as well as by young people themselves.

Bhamjee tells of his fears for mental health services

Ahead of his retirement from the Health Service Executive after 37 years of service, Dr Moosajee Bhamjee admits that “there will be a feeling of good riddance to me from elements of HSE management.” The South African-born consultant psychiatrist says he had a “tense” relationship with his HSE bosses after being a vociferous public critic of shortcomings in the mental health service over the past 20 years.

Special programme to tackle severe self-harm

The Endeavour Programme is the first of its kind in HSE South, treating those with Borderline Personality Disorder in an outpatient setting. It is hoped that the programme will not only be another step towards implementing mental health policy- Vision for Change - but will ultimately improve the lives of those with complex emotional problems by helping clinicians to treat people in a more systematic and effective way.

Innovative Mental Health Project Under Way

An innovative project centred around clinical services for individuals and families affected by psychosis is now under way in Wicklow. HSE Mental Health Services in Wicklow - in conjunction with a number of non- statutory providers - will lead the project, funded by the Genio Trust, which will build capacity for better clinical services.

Work to start within months on Cork €12m mental health unit

Building work on a new mental health unit in Cork will start within months. Plans are afoot to build a new mental health unit at Cork University Hospital (CUH), to include two 18-bed wards with single rooms, a six-bed assessment and observation ward and clinical therapy facilities.

Postnatal depression ups risk in offspring

The children of women who suffered severe postnatal depression appear to be at a significantly increased risk of developing depression themselves, the results of a new study indicate. This marks the first study to demonstrate that the effects of maternal depression on the likelihood of a child developing depression may begin as early as in infancy.

Big increase in number of self-harm cases in Galway

There has been a marked increase in the number of people in Galway who are self-harming –over a three-year period, a new report has shown. The National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF), found a 29 per cent increase in the rates of deliberate self-harm by men in County Galway. In Galway City, the rate of increase was 17 per cent for men.

Suicide prevention project to be rolled out for Ballincollig

A new suicide-awareness project, which has been running in Glanmire for several years, is to be rolled out to the Blarney and Ballincollig areas. The voluntary, community-based suicide awareness initiative has seen adults meet young people in their own surroundings, and give them a number which they can ring if they are at risk.
