Why banning ECT would be a big mistake
Irish Times (Tuesday, 22 February 2011)
The treatment can work when all else fails, writes Muiris Houston. If even a small minority of lives can be saved with the treatment, then access to ECT must be maintained. As long as, where possible, the patient gives valid, fully informed consent, which includes a discussion of ECT’s side effects and risks, then the treatment must remain available.
Concern at high use of sedatives in psychiatric units
Irish Times (Saturday, 19 February 2011)
Mental health inspectors have expressed concern at the high use of sedatives in psychiatric hospitals and called for a review of drug use in about a third of the centres.
They have also strongly criticised the State’s failure to close several dilapidated mental health facilities, which are unfit for habitation. In some cases funding problems are causing delays to new facilities forcing older facilities to remain open, say inspectors.
Central Mental Hospital standards criticised
Dundrum Gazette (Thursday, 17 February 2011)
A leading European human rights organisation has criticised standards at the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum. The Committee for the Prevention of Torture, which is overseen by the Council of Europe released their report on Ireland last week and highlighted a series of problems at the CMH in Dundrum, which was scheduled to move to a new site at Thornton Hall until the economic crisis occurred. The CMH is currently understaffed and close to capacity, warned the committee.
