The RTE broadcaster was speaking at the launch of a new student mental health website - mymindmatters.ie - which is aimed at providing advice, information and support to third level students, male and female, who are feeling under pressure. The collaborative project between NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork and Dundalk Institute of Technology was launched on the campus of the Galway University.

Chemical restraint of patients 'a worry'

 People are being "chemically restrained" in psychiatric hospitals in order to control behaviour, despite there being no regulation around such treatment.   The issue was pointed out as a serious area of concern in a report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. 
 

Ombudsman calls for St Patrick's detention centre to be closed

Ombudsman for Children Emily Logan has called on an incoming government to expedite the closure of St Patrick’s Institution, a detention centre that holds children and adults between the ages of 16 and 21 years.

 

Mental health centre to open at convent

 A new  purpose-built 20-bedroom psychiatric unit for children and adolescents is to open in the middle of the month.   The €8m development, Child and Adoles- cent Mental Health, will employ up to 60 when fully functioning, and will be based at the Sacred Heart Convent at Bessboro in Blackrock, The new development wiH serve the needs of the HSE South region and replaces the eight-bed Eist Linn unit which has been operating out of St Stephen's Hospital in Glanmire
 

WEST CORK SERVICE WINS HEALTH AWARD

The West Cork mental health service has been awarded 'Most Improved Service 2010' in a survey carried out by National Service User Executive (NSUE), it was announced this week, The HSE South's Mental Health Service received one of three awards made by NSUE at a seminar following the 'Second Opinion' survey, which was completed at the end of 2010 and tracked its development over the past three years.

 

St Michael's psychiatric unit is thrown a lifeline

The forty nine bed St Michaels acute psychiatric unit threatened with closure last year has been thrown a lifeline following the release of a report which vindicated a stance taken by consultants who opposed HSE plans for the facility. The MSB now have to agree with the consultants at St. Michaels on the appointment of an outside independent facilitator to work with a steering group set up to develop mental health services in South Tipperary and Carlow/ Kilkenny.
