The first large scale study of eating disorders in the very young suggests that three in every 100,000 children in Ireland and in the UK under the age of 13 have such a disorder.

Mental health expert dies, aged 54

The death has occurred of psychotherapist and author Dr Áine Tubridy. Dr Tubridy, who trained as a medical doctor, is known for promoting a holistic approach to mental health, an area which she wrote about and taught throughout her career.

Central Mental Hospital signs first conditional discharge

The 1st ever order for a conditional discharge from the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) has been signed under new legislation which allows for the recall of patients if strict rules are breached. The new law is an amendment to the Criminal Law Insanity Act 2006 and provides the Mental Health Review Board, which makes decisions on freeing patients referred by the courts, with the crucial option to discharge them with conditions attached.

Teen readers can avoid depression

Teenagers who lock themselves in their rooms and blare music are eight times more likely to suffer from depression, according to a study this week. But reading instead means they are 10 times more likely to avoid the disorder, said US researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine.

Suicide rate at all-time high, says Minister

Ireland’s suicide rate was the highest in its history, Minister of State for Health Kathleen Lynch revealed in the Dáil yesterday. She said provisional figures for 2009 indicated an increase of 4 per cent to 527, the highest number ever recorded.

Survey reveals suicide shock

A new survey has revealed that almost one in ten Irish people {8 per cent) have had suicidal thoughts due to the financial pressure of not being able to provide for their family. The poll was carried out by itsfree.ie on 200 people aged between 25 and 45.
