O'Driscoll joins battle against the blues

Brian O’Driscoll yesterday encouraged teenagers "not to bottle their feelings up" and to "share their issues" in the battle against depression. The Ireland rugby captain tackled the issue at the launch of the "Think Big' initiative, which aims to kick the stigma around teen depression into touch by providing young people with a creative outlet to show what they are capable of. The Leinster star said it was important "not to treat young people any differently" and to "lend an ear to their feelings".
 

Campaign to resist cuts to community work schemes

A new campaign will attempt to defend the rights of people with disabilities and lone parents to access community employment schemes.

Public encouraged to visit public mental hospitals

Members of the public are being encouraged this week to visit friends and family in public mental hospitals as part of a new project to banish the mental health stigma. Cork City's Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael O'Connell, said this week that he was supporting the social project inspired by Cork Independent columnist and Mad Pride founder, John McCarthy. According to Mr McCarthy, the project aims to smash the stigma while supporting those in emotional distress.

450 jobs as new DIT campus is signed off

A major new college campus costing almost half a billion euro was formally approved by the Cabinet today. The planned Dublin Institute of Technology campus on the old Grangegorman psychiatric hospital site in Dublin's north inner city will include a state of the art mental health facility. The new-look Grangegorman will provide new residential facilities for mental health patients of St Bren- dan's Hospital, currently living in antiquated accommodation. The first phase of the building work will focus on the replacement mental health facilities, with occupancy due in early 2012.

Daily healthy eating could be declared a mental illness

People who eat healthily every day or suffer temper tantrums could be deemed to be suffering from a mental disorder if proposed categories of mental illnesses are accepted in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).  Due in 2013, the proposals have sparked international fury. Opponents say the manual will reclassify ordinary, clinically insignificant behaviour as a mental disorder. The American Psychiatry Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a world-respected book in the field of psychiatry that is referred by many in the profession as "the bible of psychiatry".

Suicide Prevention

Government doesn’t care, says O’Leary

Its time the government took suicide as seriously as it takes zombie banks -Speaking in Wexford at a vigil organised to mark World Suicide Prevention Week, commentator Olivia O’Leary said the government seems to think it had more of a responsibility to banks than to its citizens and said investment in mental health services remained risible – despite repeated promises that services would improve. Organised by the 3Ts (Turn the Tide Against Suicide) charity, the vigil was organised for all those who have lost family, colleagues and friends through suicide and to highlight the support of the wider community with special guest speakers, music and a minute’s silence.
