A world expert on internet security will help a college promote positive mental health as part of a week-long initiative which begins today. University College Cork (UCC) graduate Dr Rachel O'Connell is the former chief safety officer with social networking site Bebo.

A report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, "makes it crystal clear that airbrushing plays a harmful role when it comes to negative body image and eating disorders. Airbrushing has a really damaging impact on people's self-esteem and that's why I am now calling for the European Commission to investigate the issue and consider introducing a mandatory warning label system", she said.

Psychiatric nursing crisis as retirees not replaced

The retirement of an unprecedented number of psychiatric nurses in Kerry will have serous implications for mental health services in the county, a nurses' union leader warned. Cormac Williams, organiser of the Killarney and Kerry South branch of the Psychiatric Nurses' Association (PNA), said 23 nurses who retired in the past year are not being replaced, "This leaves a chronic shortage of nurses on ' the ground," he claimed.
Psychiatrist says rules for ECT 'need to change'

A consultant psychiatrist employed by the HSE has warned that psychiatrists have “too much power” and that rules on the use of electro-shock therapy need to be changed to protect patients.

Six-year-old children now self harming

Children as young as six have been treated in hospital after deliberately harming them- selves - and more are going untreated, psychiatrists have warned. The Herald has learned that 197 children aged between six and 16 were identified at Crumlin children's hospital as deliberately self-harming between 1993 and 2003.

The Lois Bridges Eating Disorder Treatment Centre has become the first residential centre in a non-hospitalised setting to receive approved status from the Mental Health Commission (MHC).
