Hospitals in Cork, have agreed a new policy on the management of patient transfers from an emergency department to psychiatric units following the death of a man by suicide.
Workers oppose move of mental health acute unit

Wexford mental health workers are poised to oppose any move to shift the St. Senan's Hospital admissions unit to Waterford Regional. Psychiatric nurses union S.I.P.T.U. believes that the move is under active consideration by the H.S.E. but local organiser Pat Cody has warned that it will be resisted by his members.
Mental health staffing crisis escalates

The staffing crisis within the mental health services in the county has escalated this week following a ballot for industrial action by members of the Psychiatric Nurses Association.
€1,000 per day on security of patient

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has spent €600,000 on 24 hour security for one patient at the acute psychiatric unit at Ennis General Hospital over the past 18 months.
System 'unable to deal with prisoners with mental illness'

Penal reformers said the prison system is unable to deal with the number of prisoners with a severe mental illness, despite some encouraging initiatives. Responding to Sally's story, the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) also expressed "serious concern" that prisons might be used as a solution to deal with patients who are deemed "unsuitable ' for residential treatment in the community.

New strategies suggested to stop inappropriate treatment requests

Clinicians may use one of several approaches to deny patient requests for an inappropriate treatment while preserving the physician-patient relationship, according to a new report. The report followed a study in which researchers analysed data from a randomised trial on the behaviour of primary care clinicians in response to requests for antidepressant medication.
