Junk food is linked to anxiety in women

Women who suffer from depression and anxiety may need to cut out processed foods, says a new study. Researchers from the University of Melbourne, Australia, found mood disorders were more common among women aged 20 to 93 who, over 10 years, ate primarily processed, refined, high-fat foods.

Government to amend mental health legislation

The government is to push through legislation in the spring to allow the recall of patients conditionally discharged from the Central Mental Hospital. The Criminal Law (Insanity) (Amendment) Bill is being drafted at the request of the Mental Health (Criminal Law) Review Board, which reviews the detention of every patient in Dundrum every six months.

The Department of Justice has created www.coroners.ie , which is run by a Coroner Service Implementation Team based at Athlumney House in Johnstown, Navan.

Garda statistics and indicators about deaths that would otherwise be referred to as "misadventure" suggest that more than 700 people committed suicide in 2009. Aside from the widely reported cases in which developers and businessmen killed themselves after suffering financial ruin, gardai and emergency service professionals say they encountered an unusually high number of young men committing suicide over the past 12 months.
Widowed people twice as likely to die by suicide

Widowed men and women are more than twice as likely to die by suicide or accidental death every year, new research has found. The disturbing toll has emerged in the first Irish research into the rate of suicide and accidental death among widowed Irish people. And some of the deaths could be preventable if vulnerable people had more contact from social services and health professionals. Study author Paul Corcoran looked at the death patterns among widowed.
