Portrane chosen as site for Central Mental Hospital

A site has been chosen for the relocation of the State’s Central Mental Hospital. It will move to Portrane in north Dublin from Dundrum, in the city’s southern suburbs, it has been confirmed.

€6.3m mental health unit

The HSE and BAM have signed contracts worth €6.3 million for the construction of a new generation Mental Health Residential Unit for Clonmel. The unit will incorporate HIQA guidelines based on the principle that people with disabilities in residential services should be enabled to lead full lives, comparable to those of their fellow citizens.

Cork psychiatrist joins ECT campaign

The Clinical Director of Mental Health Services in West Cork, Pat Bracken, has added his voice to a growing campaign aimed at deleting section 59b of the Mental Health Act 2001, which provides for involuntary Electro-Convulsive Treatment (ECT) for psychiatric patients.


Suicide Prevention

Scheme urges safe disposal of medicines

More than 3.5 tonnes of unused medicines were disposed of in Cork last year — under a scheme which was originally set up as a suicide prevention strategy. The campaign, run by the Health Service Executive (HSE) South and community pharmacists, is aimed at encouraging people in Cork and Kerry to safely dispose of unused or of out-of-date medicines.
