80% of suicide victims talked of idea in weeks before death

More than 80 per cent of people who took their own lives discussed suicidal ideas with someone in the fortnight before their death, new research indicates. The findings form part of a major research project in Ireland involving 400 cases in the coroners’ courts and interviews with more than 200 relatives of people who died by suicide.

Ireland has been condemned for not investing enough in the future welfare of children by the world's leading promoter of economic growth. The first report on the welfare of children across 30 countries by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has found Ireland is among the worst performing nations when it comes to the amount of money spent on general child welfare.

A Tullamore man is currently to the forefront of new cutting edge technology which could lead to improvements in the treatment of Alzheimer s, Parkinson s and Schizophrenia. Professor John Lowry, a native of Cormac Street Tullamore, is head of Chemistry, at NUI Maynooth. Professor Lowry has invented new technology which is capable of tracking levels of chemicals in the brain in real time over the course of weeks or even months.


Half of patients don't finish course of drugs

More than half of all patients prescribed medication for depression stopped taking their drugs before the course had ended, according to new research released yesterday.

Student faked mental illness

A Swedish art student was fined 2,500 kroner (€245) for faking mental illness for an art project. Stockholm District Court convicted 35-year-old Anna Odell of violent resistance and dishonest conduct, but acquitted her of charges of raising a false alarm.

Teetotallers more depressed than moderate drinkers

The nation’s much- maligned love affair with alcohol may not be all bad it seems after a study found people who avoided liquor altogether suffered higher rates of depression and were more likely to lack certain social skills.
