One in five young people avoid going to a doctor when ill because of the costs involved, according to a new national survey. The survey of 18-25 year olds also reveals a generation of young adults under increasing economic strain, the consequences of which are preventing them taking full advantage of health and educational opportunities.
Idle mental health unit for children

A VITAL unit for children with mental health problems that has been ready to open for several months is still lying idle because staff have not been appointed to run it. The temporary eight-bed inpatient facility in Cork would have brought the total number of beds for young people across the country to 30.

Funding boost for cross-border health and social care provision

Health services in the border region are set to benefit from a welcome injection of cash. €30 million has been secured from the European Union INTERREO IVA programme for cross-border health and social care services, which will benefit people living in the North and the border counties. The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) in Northern Ireland and the Department of Health and Children in the Republic of Ireland worked together to secure the funds

Grammy nominee to headline suicide fundraiser

Singer Maura O'Connell, whose uncle took his own life will headline a fundraising concert this weekend for families affected by suicide. The Grammy award-nominated star from Co Clare also revealed she listens to music to help pull herself through difficult times.
Candles in memory of suicide victims

Lighted candles by the banks of the Boyne will remember all victims of suicide in a beautiful ceremony to take place on Friday, June 26th. The event organised by SOSAD Drogheda's support group for suicide victims, takes place behind Scotch Hall on Friday at 8pm.
Self-harm patients leave A&E before receiving assessment

A relatively high proportion of deliberate self-harm patients across the State’s four HSE areas leave hospital emergency departments before receiving an assessment, according to the National Registry of Deliberate Self Harm (NRDSH).
