Electric shock therapy 'very effective'

There is a pressing need to improve electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to reduce side effects while maintaining its undoubted effectiveness, according to a leading psychiatry professor, Prof Declan McLoughlin of Trinity College Dublin. With a view to developing the treatment further, Prof McLoughlin and a team of experts have started a trial comparing two different forms of ECT with a one year follow-up.

Low birth weight linked to psychosis

Low birth weight may increase the risk of developing psychosis-like symptoms, new research indicates.  The study assessed 6,000 12-year-old children, who had been followed since birth, to find out if they had experienced any hallucinations or delusions over the last six months.

HSE told of staff shortages

The Central Mental Hospital has told the Health Service Executive (HSE) it has no option but to cease admitting new patients due to staffing shortages. The hospital has 25 nursing vacancies which cannot be filled due to the moratorium on recruitment in the public sector.

Application for mental health facility

Grangegorman Development Agency has applied for planning permission for a five-storey mental health facility on North Circular Road in Dublin 7.The proposed development would also include the demolition of four buildings at St Brendan’s Hospital off Grangegorman Road.

60% turnout at hospital poll

FIRST VOTES CAST: THE FIRST votes in the European and local elections were cast yesterday at a polling station in the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) in Dundrum. Traditionally, residents of the off-shore islands are the first to cast their votes in the days before polling day but this year many of the 93 patients resident in CMH were the first to get their chance to vote.

New Primary Care Centre opens in Strokestown

Mr. Michael Finneran TD, Minister of State at the  Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government with  special responsibility for  Housing and Local Areas, officially opened a new Primary Care Centre in Strokestown on Tuesday morning.


Suicide Prevention

'Dearth' of research into institutional child abuse criticised

More research into the area of institutional childhood abuse and suicidal behaviour is needed and be prioritised, a leading suicide  researcher has said. Dr Ella Arensman of the National Suicide Research Foundation,  who along with co-researcher  Martina  O'Riordan, carried out a study on the topic, found that there is a "dearth" of research in the area,  not just in this country but internationally.
