Elan enter partnership to commercialise new drug

ELAN, Ireland's largest pharmaceutical company, announced last night that it had signed an agreement with fellow drug development company, Azur Pharma Limited to commercialise once-daily formulations of Clozapine using Elan's drug delivery technologies. Clozapine is a drug currently marketed for the management of severely ill schizophrenic patients.

Psychiatric hospital for teens to open

The first facility in Cork to provide in-patient beds for teens with psychiatric disorders will be completed next month. According to the Health Service Executive (HSE), the recruitment process for specialist staff is underway and a number of the staffing complements have already been identified for an eight-bed, adolescent psychiatric unit, which will be fully commissioned by the end of December at St Stephen's Hospital in Glanmire.
 

Hospital nears end as old ward closes

A MAJOR move towards the planned permanent closure of St Finan’s Hospital in Killarney took a major step forward this week with the shutdown of one of its wards. Our Lady’s psycho-geriatric ward has been closed this week, with the transfer of the remaining five patients to another part of the hospital. The HSE South said that it was in line with the 2006 national mental health strategy 2006 Vision for Change.

Dublin's own graffiti artist, Maser, has marked the launch of the new website for HeadsUp Rehab, a mental health promotion programme, with a specially-commissioned graffiti wall.

CMH plans may be 'shelved'

Plans to locate the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) at the Thornton Hall prison site may now be shelved, as the Government seeks cash guarantees from the consortium selected to build the prison.
  
 
 

Prison system criticised as mentally ill prisoner stages dirty protest

The Irish Prison Service (IPS) has confirmed that a prisoner with a psychiatric illness is conducting a dirty protest in Cork Prison, which is operating in excess of its capacity. A spokesperson for the IPS said the man was being monitored and that all medical services available to the wider community were available to prisoners.

New suicice crisis programme reaches out

The 2005 Reach Out document identified that links between primary care services and mental health services must be improved, and more specifically to: "develop a fast track priority referral system from primary care to community-based mental health services for individuals experiencing a suicidal crisis who contact primary care services". As a result of the above recommendation, the National Office for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with the Cluain Mhuire Service, developed a pilot Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse (SCAN), with the aim of providing a rapid referral service for GPs to utilise when presented with a client in a suicidal crisis.
