Carers call on Committee to oppose move

The Central Mental Hospital Carers’ Group (CMHCG) called on the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children to oppose the Government’s proposal to move the Central Mental Hospital. The plan would see the hospital relocated to a site adjacent to the new prison site at Thornton Hall, north Dublin.

 

Government to begin selling psychiatric hospital sites

The Government has now embarked on plans to sell off the lands of at least seven major psychiatric hospitals in order to raise funds for new mental health facilities.
Minister of State for Mental Health John Moloney said a project to estimate the value of the lands had been commissioned and the process of selling some of the lands could begin next year.

 

State's appeal against mental health Act decision rejected

The Supreme Court has rejected the State’s appeal against a High Court decision in 2004 that a section of the Mental Treatment Act 1945 is unconstitutional.  The entire 1945 Act has since been replaced by the Mental Health Act 2001 and the issues in the appeal were described by the Supreme Court as “historic”.

Be careful who your friends are.  A new study indicates that the peer group a teenage girl identifies with may determine how she controls her weight. According to US researchers, dangerous weight control practices, such as excessive dieting and the development of eating disorders, often begin in adolescence and can have serious long-term effects on health.

Probe into smoking drug after suicide link

A drug which helps smokers trying to quit their habit and which has been linked to suicidal thoughts, is to be subject to further study, according to the Irish Medicines Board.  Champix (the brand name for varenicline) has been on sale in Ireland since December 2006 and was the subject of a previous EU review when patients reported depression and suicidal thoughts associated with the use of the drug.
