Attitudes to mental problems must change

Depression leads as main cause of hospitalisation

Depression accounted for almost one in three admissions to Irish psychiatric units last year, according to latest statistics.  The figures show that there were 20,288 admissions to psychiatric units last year — 965 fewer than in 2005. A total of 5,601 people were admitted for the first time, but readmissions accounted for seven out of every 10 admissions.

HSE told to focus on mental health

The Minister for Health has raised concerns on receipt of the HSE’s National Service Plan (NSP) for 2008 recently, chief among these was her wish that more priority be focused on mental health services.  Despite her concerns, Minister Harney has signed off on the Service Plan, however she has asked the HSE to take into account the importance of prioritising service delivery in the area of mental health.

Service crisis for children with mental health problems in south-east

Parents of up to 150 children with mental health problems in the south-east are still waiting for a full service to be provided in the area. A child psychiatrist was "historically" available for children in the Carlow and Kilkenny regions with autism, ADHD and other disorders. However, according to a spokesperson, since early 2007 the HSE has had to refer a "cohort of clients" to outside consultant child and adolescent consultant psychiatrists for assessment.


Suicide Prevention

County's suspected suicide toll continues to rise

The number of suspected suicides in Clare continues on an upward trend with 17 people suspected of dying through suicide last year.  According to provisional figures provided by the Clare County Coroners Office, 17 people — 16 male and one female — are suspected of taking their own lives last year.

Academic questions dolled up dolls

The best-selling Bratz dolls are contributing to the early sexualisation of girls, according to a leading academic. The dolls are targeted at the pre-teen market, and almost 200 million have been sold worldwide since they were introduced seven years ago. One of the authors of the APA report, Prof Tomi-Ann Roberts, will tell a meeting at Trinity College tonight that the early sexualisation of children, as portrayed in various media, is having a detrimental effect on young girl's self-esteem and their physical and mental health.
