Conference on mental health told of focus on recovery

The treatment of patients with mental illness across the State should in future be focused on their recovery, rather than on just the medical treatment of their symptoms, the Mental Health Commission has said. At a conference in Dublin, it outlined how this approach could be adopted by all health professionals. The approach, which facilitates discussions with patients on how they would like to be treated, has already been adopted by a number of countries, including New Zealand, the UK and the US.

'Map' of victims' lives may reveal cause of suicide

A pilot project to be introduced in Cork will see researchers working with coroners and bereavement counsellors to "map" the lives of suicide victims in a bid to uncover the factors that led to their deaths.  The Cork-based National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) said it had been granted funding by the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) to carry out the project," which is expected to last up to 18 months.  Paul Corcoran of NSRF said if the pilot project proved successful it should be rolled out nationally.  "We would collect information from coroners and access data from [bereavement counselling] groups and family members to try to get more depth," he said.


€10 a year sought for suicide prevention

Dublin's streets have seen protests about hundreds of issues, ranging from beef prices to the Middle East, but few were as poignant as yesterday's demonstration. It involved a group of parents and siblings with little power or political clout. But at 1.25pm, a garda raised his hand and stopped the traffic on Parnell Square to let them make their way. Then lone piper Kevin Duncan led the Action on Suicide Alliance from the Garden of Remembrance to the Dáil, as they held aloft photographs of their loved ones who died by suicide.

Mentally ill children left waiting for aid

Children with "urgent" mental health problems waited more than three years to see a psychiatrist or other experts, according to a report that also showed other children classed as "non-urgent" had to wait more than five years. The appalling waiting lists for children in Co Kerry were revealed in a national review of child and family services, which found 77 children in the county were on the urgent list with the longest waiting three years and three months to be seen.

8,000 nurses in action over assaults payout

More than 8,000 psychiatric nurses will begin industrial action next Wednesday in a dispute with the HSE over a scheme set up to compensate nurses injured in an assault at work.  Speaking at the first day of the Psychiatric Nurses-Association's annual conference in Trim, Co Meath, yesterday, general secretary Des Kavanagh said the current scheme was inadequate and nurses' patience was exhausted.  The industrial action will see nurses refusing to work overtime.  They will also refuse to accompany patients to mental health tribunals and to attend non-essential meetings.
