Mind Yourself Press Release
Mind Yourself Press Release
The ‘Mind Yourself’ Project is a suicide prevention and positive mental health project for young people in the HSE’s Dublin North East Region. The ‘Mind Yourself’ Project is run in partnership with the HSE through the National Suicide Research Foundation in Cork and is funded largely by the HSE’s Health Inequalities Fund. The project’s base is in Iontas in Castleblayney. Running in schools and community organisations, this programme endeavours to show young people positive ways of problem solving and coping with difficult issues and situations. The programme ran a pilot phase in counties Cavan/Monaghan in 2004/2005, and received additional funding in early 2006, when it was extended to provide the programme for schools and youth groups in Meath and Louth. The results of the pilot phase of the programme are very promising and the feedback from the young people involved has been very positive with over 90% indicating that they enjoyed the sessions and 84% stating that they found them useful. As part of the research, a programme manual has been created and is being used with young people throughout Ireland and the UK, with further interest from some European countries. However, the focus of the Project is on the local region and the project has enjoyed great support in county Monaghan, having received significant amounts of funding from the Monaghan Lions Club and also from the ‘Wedding March”, and McKenna family. As a result of the funding provided specifically by the ‘Wedding March”, Mind Yourself has developed the ‘Mind Yourself: Take the First Step’ Programme for adults in County Monaghan. All adults with an interest in learning more about “minding yourself”, positive mental health issues and happier living will be invited to take part in this 6 week programme. Programmes will be held in a number of centres throughout the county over the next 12 months with the first course starting on 30th May 2007 in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan. ‘Mind Yourself’ are also developing additional programmes such as the ‘Training for Trainers programme’ (Funded by the Monaghan Lions Club), a ‘Postvention Programme’ and other programmes to be used in different settings. For further information on Mind Yourself, to book a place on the ‘Take the First Step Programme or to request a copy of the ‘Mind Yourself’ Pilot Study Evaluation Report please contact Fiona Flynn on 087 9829224.
