Irish Examiner: 6 July 2007

Irish anti-suicide cam paigners will travel to London next week with their counterparts in the North in a bid to close down websites that facilitate suicide attempts. The North-South delegation is led by the North's Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety Michael McGimpsey and will meet internet service providers on Tuesday to try to monitor "pro-suicide" sites and web content, including Bebo. Members of the Samaritans will also attend, while the head of the National Office of Suicide Prevenion here, Geoff Day, said he was backing the move and hoped to attend. It follows the death by suicide pact last month of two men who made ar- rangements to take their own lives through the in- ternet. The bodies of Barry McGlade, 20, from Brook Valley in Omagh and Nico- las Jamieson, 24, from Walkinstown in Dublin, were found at Gortin lakes in Co

That some pretty powerful stuff. The latest internet revolution is all based around social networking and as a result large organisations like bebo have a huge responsibility. Lets hope that this delegation opens their eyes & promotes some positive changes in policies so tragic events like this don't happen again.
