Regulatory Bodies

If you do not receive a response to your letter and you want to pursue your complaint, the next thing to do is approach a Regulatory Body.

Please see below for a list of Regulatory Bodies.

Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland

The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland (ASAI) is an independent self-regulatory body set up by the advertising industry. The ASAI enforces the rules set out in the Code of Standards for Advertising, Promotional and Direct Marketing.

You can contact the ASAI to register a complaint about marketing communication on TV, radio, internet, posters, brochures, newspapers, magazines, emails, cinema, direct mailings, etc., or  sales promotional material. You can register your complaint online at www.asai.ie or by post.

Consult the website or phone the ASAI for details on how to complain.

Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland

The www.hotline.ie service was established in November 1999 by the Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland (ISPAI) to combat illegal material, especially child pornography, on the Internet.

The Hotline responds mainly to complaints about content suspected to be criminally illegal. However, it will follow up complaints of harmful content deemed to be in breach of the ISPAI Code of Practice and Ethics, where this is found to be hosted by ISPAI members.

Harmful content is defined by the ISPAI code as: “content which includes any unlawful, libellous, abusive, offensive, vulgar or obscene material or any activities deliberately calculated to cause unreasonable offence to others, which whilst not necessarily illegal, is none-the-less considered inappropriate and deliberately calculated to cause unreasonable anxiety inconvenience or stress to others."

It is preferred that members of the public wishing to make a complaint about illegal or harmful Internet content, contact www.hotline.ie through the confidential reporting forms which are provided on the website.

The ISPAI Hotline is a member of INHOPE, the international network of Internet hotlines, which facilitates rapid reaction to reports of illegal content found to be hosted in participating countries. The Internet Services Providers Association of Ireland Code of Practice and Ethics can be viewed online at www.ispai.ie.
